day vs ten

Two sounds close enough to trade places: the “ay” of day and the “eh” of ten. Swap one for the other and a different word comes out — this page is how to keep them apart, in both directions.

/eɪ/ ay as in day
/e/ eh as in ten

When they trade places

“ay” (as in day) coming out as “eh” (as in ten)

Glide the vowel — start mid-open and finish with the tongue rising toward a brief ee position.

“This vowel has a tail, bello! It starts eh and slides up to a little ee. Eh-ee! Do not chop the tail off!”Nunzio, when he hears it

You cannot hear your own swap. That is the whole problem.

Nunzio records you reading a sentence, scores every sound in it on your phone — nothing is uploaded — and tells you which of these two actually came out. Nunzio — Accent Coach is coming to the App Store and Google Play.
